Optimization of cold chain communication
Booth and Workshop at FreshTec Rotterdam
21-23 September 2009
1. Summarisation of the industrial forum in Rotterdam
This forum focussed on the presentation of the latest results relevant for SMEs and the industrie.
The Fresh Rotterdam focused on technical aspects of food production as well as food itself. It was possible to get a combination of booth and a workshop at the Fresh Rotterdam.
From the predefined target groups (representatives of food related European projects, Researchers, young scientists and industry representatives) mainly industry representatives visited the workshop and the booth.
The workshop was promoted under the title “Optimization of cold chain communication” with information on the fields of Novel Shelf Life Prediction, cold chain monitoring, Intelligent Packaging and Cooling and Global Supply Chain Management. The workshop took place at room Dock 5 close to the exhibition. After each presentation the time was used by the visitors to discuss the results under aspects like portability to other food chains, costs and practicability. 22 participants took part in the workshop (6 from the project; 16 external).

3. Presentations of Chill-On at the booth
From Monday 21 september until the evening of Wednesday 23 september ttz and Chainfood representatives were continuously active in promoting and presentation of Chill-On results. 6222 people visited the Freshtec in total. Circa 40 visitors discussed Chill-On results more in detail at the booth.
Beside some general information about the Chill-On project the Tracechill-system including some hardware (TTIs) was presented at the booth. Beside a common presentation some partners presented results in form of posters. The following table gives an overview on the presented posters:
Title of poster | Responsible partner |
Optimised chilling technologies of cod from catch to consumer | Matís, Reykjavík, Iceland |
Effects of chilling technologies on developing microbial populations and spoilage indicators during storage of whole, gutted haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) | Matís, Reykjavík, Iceland |

Focus
The European Union is the second-largest market for frozen food products. With 70% of food products being traded internationally, high quality and safety management are required within the food supply chain.
Unfortunately, there is still no integrated concept available for the chilled and frozen food chain which allows for both the complete and continuous monitoring of food safety, plus quality and traceability of the entire food chain. To achieve this, the CHILL-ON project works on:
1. Risk assessment of the chilled/frozen food supply chain and development of a quantitative microbial risk model (QMRA) combined with HACCP.
2. Cost-effective bio sensing technologies for the qualitative and quantitative detection of low temperature micro-organisms.
3. Cost-effective chilling applications, low temperature transport and storage supporting technologies to extend shelf life.
4. A new generation of so-called “eChillOn – Smart Labels” (Combination of TTI and RFID technologies).
5. A new IT system (software and hardware) for data handling (TRACECHILL) and transfer (GPS, MDA, etc.).
All developments in the area of food safety & quality within Chill-On have to comply with current and future expectations of the industries involved. This implies that new technological developments have to be assessed thoroughly with respect to their operational capacity, reliability and economic value.
Therefore, the European Stakeholder Forum brings together the industry and research community to enhance the exchange of information regarding quality issues.
